Managing Client Expectations and Setting Boundaries

Managing client expectations gives you the opportunity to become a better leader, team member, and business owner. And as a virtual assistant, you get to embody all three of these personas!

How you manage expectations shows others how you manage yourself and ultimately, your business. If you have clearly defined parameters and boundaries, it showcases what you will and will not take on, how well you work with others, and how you value your time. It also helps you attract the people you want to work with.

How do you do this effectively and efficiently?

Communication.

You probably saw this coming, but let’s dig a little deeper.

Managing client expectations and setting boundaries looks like talking with your clients about your role within their business, projects/tasks you will take on that fit your niche and deadlines, hours you work and when, emergency and non-emergency communication preferences, etc.

This all comes to communicating clearly and concisely. The most difficult part that comes with expectations and boundaries is reinforcing them regularly and holding yourself accountable.

But the good thing about regularly reinforcing these boundaries and expectations is that it actually helps with self-accountability. Think about it: if you make sure to check-in with your clients frequently on expectations, this serves as a push to take responsibility for the role you are given.

Think of checking in as your little reminder to keep being the best you can be for your clients!
