Working alongside others gives you the opportunity to be the best version of yourself, FOR yourself and for your team. There are many pieces to this puzzle; and one of the challenges that comes with this, is managing people’s emotions.
You might be thinking, “Why is it my responsibility to manage their emotions?” It’s more in the sense of being able to read the people around you and give them the energy and encouragement they need in that moment to help them stay calm.
At the end of the day, this is where compatibility comes in, and why personality is a huge factor in our placement process.
A good way of thinking about this is with Jason Barger’s leadership lesson, ‘thermometer vs thermostat.’
A thermometer reads the temperature in a room, and tells you what it is.
A thermostat regulates the temperature. If it’s too hot or too cold, it adjusts the temperature accordingly.
As a team, it’s common to get stuck in thermometer mode; but the most successful teams operate in thermostat mode.
Adjusting and regulating the temperature of your team members can be a big role to take on, but with time and awareness, it becomes easier and makes your partnership stronger.
